Is Your Fireplace Ready for Winter?
Carrying out a few simple checks annually helps keep your fireplace working well and your home safe during the cooler months.
A live fire's warmth and soft glow create a cosy atmosphere on chilly evenings. Regular upkeep is essential whether you have a wood heater, a freestanding electric fireplace, or a gas fireplace. As per the advice of the NSW Fire and Rescue Services, you should also test smoke alarms every month and fit them in living areas, hallways, and bedrooms.
General Fireplace Safety Checklist
These steps apply regardless of your fireplace type:
- Fit a fire screen: Place a guard before the fire opening. It stops ash or sparks from flying into the room and helps keep kids and pets at a safe distance.
- Keep clear space: Leave at least one metre between furniture or decor (like photo frames) and the fire. Secure items that could tip into the fire opening.
- Store items away: Towels, blankets, and other fabrics must be stored well away from the fire.
- Supervise children: Never leave young ones alone when the fire is lit.
- Entirely switch off: Ensure the flame is out before sleeping or leaving the house.
Caring for Wood-Burning Fireplaces
Wood fires bring rich scent and authentic flame, but they need regular attention:
- Chimney sweeping: Book a qualified cleaner annually, ideally at the end of the season when humidity is low. A skilled cleaner will remove soot and creosote, check the firebox, liner, and chimney cap for cracks, and confirm that your chimney is sound.
- Maintain ash insulation: Keep about a one-inch layer of cold ash in the firebox. It helps retain heat and makes it easier to light your subsequent fire. When removing excess ash, ensure embers are thoroughly cooled, the damper is closed, and you wear a mask and gloves. Store ashes in a metal bucket, dispose of small amounts in your household bin, compost or scatter in garden beds to enrich the soil.
- Check your fireplace flue kit: A good fireplace flue kit helps control airflow and keeps smoke from your home. Inspect seals and joints for leaks and arrange replacement parts if needed.
Maintaining Electric Fireplaces
Freestanding electric fireplaces offer clean heat with minimal fuss:
- Replace bulbs as needed: Depending on your model, bulbs last between two and ten years. Swapping them out is like changing a light globe—just a screwdriver required.
- Clean Annually: Unplug the unit, wait for it to cool, and wipe the glass and surfaces with a dry cloth. Use a soft brush vacuum attachment on vents, then finish with a lint-free cloth.
- Inspect wiring: Look for loose plugs or damaged cords and arrange professional service if you spot any concerns.
Servicing Gas Log Fireplaces
To keep a gas log fire safe and efficient, such as a gas fireplace in Sutton Forest, you need a licensed specialist:
- Professional check every two years: A certified Type A gasfitter plumber will test valves, burners and safety devices.
- Clean logs and outlets: Gas logs can build up dust. Once the gas supply is off, brush logs gently and clear burner ports with a soft brush.
- Consider a freestanding gas fireplace upgrade: Newer models may give better heat distribution and lower running costs.
Outdoor Wood Fireplaces and Firepits
An outdoor wood fireplace creates a great focal point for evenings under the stars:
- Position safely: Set your outdoor wood fireplace or fire pit at least three metres from buildings, fences or trees. Use a firm, level base such as stone or gravel.
- Keep clear space: Leave one metre around the fire for seating or tables, and remove overhanging branches or decorations that could catch sparks.
- Use dry wood: Wet logs produce less heat and more smoke. Store wood undercover and add only seasoned timber to the flame.
Preparing for Emergencies
Having a plan saves lives. Make or update your home fire escape plan and practise it with your household. Keep the Fire Rescue NSW Home Fire Safety Booklet for extra tips. If a fire breaks out, get everyone out safely, call Triple Zero (000) and stay clear of danger.
